She with humor lays down an interesting narrative.

Six With Shirley May :

1. How is the music going?

The music is going on well. Am pushing on hard as usual.

2. As a novice in the whole music world what do you think of the genre now and before? More still have you heard any set backs?

Actually I think the industry is growing each and everyday in particular the hip hop genre family is becoming bigger compared to back then. At the moment there are so many youth encouraged to join the hip hop  compared to when everyone would look at the other genres like dance-hall, ragga, RnB, reggae to mention but a few. The advantages we have in the current generation;  is that we already have set platforms like the fact that we have fore fathers and mothers. hahahahaha! I must say, the social media platforms, media houses, DJs, Producers to mention but a few.
Yuh, there are a couple of set backs I have faced like for example the issue of promotion and the audience, Ugandans are not yet very welcoming  to  Hip hop.  It could be…  they don’t relate to it especially Urban hip hop how many call it. So basically the majority of the consumers of the music are fellow artists and activists.
for me personally music calms me down, speaks to me when no one is there to talk to me … sometimes my head or mind is so noisy and music gives me the concentration of the mind.
3.We are in the womens month- as a female rapper how has it been for you,  given the feedback towards female rappers?
Am so happy with the current flow of events and feedback that I have personally gotten. I have so many people expecting a lot from me and each and everyday they keep telling me you can make it big and yuh… I know I can and I won’t disappoint any. The support is massive especially from fellow artists who have been there before me and those upcoming like me and fans too. At least I have been given an opportunity to perform on different stages at different events which is very encouraging.
So I would say music or hip hop is a form of therapy to me.
4.Now, We all experience music differently, We would love to know know if hip hop in anyway is a form of therapy to you?
Yuh that’s very true;  we all experience music differently, now for me personally music calms me down, speaks to me when no one is there to talk to me … sometimes my head or mind is so noisy and music gives me the concentration of the mind.  I sometimes have circumstances going out of hand and I slip into depression and I will not want to talk to anyone and the only way I get out of that situation is by having music going on.  For instance,  I have a song “Dear Sister” not yet recorded but when you look through the lyrics you can relate to the treatment I was getting when penning it. So I would say music or hip hop is a form of therapy to me.
hip hop has taught me how to commit and keep determined in my choices
5. In case you have been let down, in any way has hip hop been part of the tools you use to gain a piece of mind – because your Grinding on Song attempts to hint that?
Yes it is. You know most times we are let down by our very  people we bring and keep around us …  so to disapprove those who let me down I work much harder than they expect.  For example; the very first time I was coming up with the whole idea of opting  for Hip hop music over just dancing to it,  I was discouraged by many who kept telling me I would get wasted something- I never understood up to date… but as we speak at the moment when I released Grinding  On many of them told me it was a nice step I had taken and now they are actually bumping to Tusula ku Mwezi …telling me am growing but remember at the start they did not believe in me. hip hop has taught me how to commit and keep determined in my choices and I believe positive impacts.
6. Do you have work ( hip hop, poetry)that you listen to and  you greatly empathize with a persona?
Yes I do have. I listen to a lot of Lauryn Hill music like I gotta find peace of mind, Lost ones and Every ghetto, Every city. … I listen to a lot of GNL music and especially Koyi Koyi, Story ya Luka…
6.1.  Does  ‘hip hop saved my life’ apply to you?
Yuh in so many ways.
