Vini Mercy is a multi-talented artist from Moyo, West Nile, Uganda, raised in Kampala. She is a singer, rapper and a painter, who bridges the worlds of music and visual art to tell stories that reflect her identity, but most importantly, her cultural heritage. Drawing inspiration from the rhythms and narratives of her Madi ancestry,  Vini’s work feels almost like an intimate diary; one that blends tradition with modern expression. She is celebrated for her deeply rooted artistry and evocative storytelling.

Vini’s music lives in a space where soul meets RnB. Her sound is a seamless fusion of RnB, Rap and Afrobeats, carried by a calm, almost meditative aura. There is an undeniable gentle strength in her delivery, something you feel, rather than just hear. Listening to her is reminiscent of the timeless intimacy in “Asa’s Jailer” especially when you listen to tracks like her “Source Up“, or the lush RnB textures of Victoria Monet’s “On My Mama” on tracks like “Free Slave“. Whether she is crooning over soft melodies or weaving verses into her songs, her style is deliberate, soulful, emotive and deeply personal. Her music resonates deeply with listeners for its blend of various traditional Ugandan sounds, contemporary flair and her outstanding, bold lyrical content.

Across all her projects, Vini carries a consistent warmth. Through her  music, she passionately tells stories that celebrate African identity and challenge colonial legacies (her Niles’s Jewel Album) and advocate for cultural truth and empowerment and the essence of her culture and identity as is clear in her track “Countdown“. She also dives into her personal journey of self discovery and this is clear in her song Butterflies. Her music tends to linger, each track feeling like a page in a longer story she is still writing. This does not only stop with her music. At the core of her music is a deeply Ugandan artist and this shines through in all her projects. Her use of Madi in her song Countdown “Alo eri ina iso” is evidence of this. She also sings in Luganda, “Nkutwala mu Paris” in her song “Paris Break” and her collaboration with the Mith on the track “Cheza“, a song on the newly released The Ugandan Vol 2 Bali Okwabwe emphasizes how proud she is to be Ugandan.

As an artist, Vini also taps into her culture and identity through her painting and her formidable music videos. Vodo Arts Society has played a very big role in bringing all this to life, and also enabling her to connect with her fans in this way and to bridge the gap between music and art through producing her music videos. Last year from August 30th to September 27th, they worked together with her to put together a pop-up art exhibition at MOTIV. This exhibition was complementary to the drop of her album Nile’s Jewel and was curated by Zitoni Tristan Kayonga and it ran right away from the release date of the album. The melding of the album drop with the art exhibition held a surprise element for many fans and it definitely made a statement, both about  Vini Mercy as an artist, and the multi-dimensionality of the art she was championing.

Vini Mercy is a painter who uses sound as her canvas. Every lyric, and every note is a brushstroke.

To me, Vini Mercy is a painter who uses sound as her canvas. Every lyric, and every note is a brushstroke. Her calm delivery is not about holding back: it is about control, intention, and creating space for listeners to feel. As she continues to explore her roots and push her fusion of RnB and rap, Vini is quietly crafting a signature sound that feels both deeply Ugandan and universally resonant.
