Last weekend, social media was awash with congratulations from fans and fellow artistes directed to Flex D’paper for releasing his debut album Kampala Boy on December 10. The album was trending on twitter and also scoring in milsetone streams for flex and Ugandan Hip Hop all together. In about 24 hours on Apple music, the album was no. 28, then 12, 8, and no. 5 close to Azawi, Ruger and JuiceWlrd.
Kampala Boy musical opening is the victory inspired song “Cheptegei” which has a hook weaved around Joshua Cheptegei. Flex D’Paper features Navio, Fik Fameica, Mozelo Kids on this project. It is an anthem for winners. This song joins Enygma’s 2012 “Gold Medalist” about Kipsiro another Ugandan athlete.
“Run the streets like Cheptegei…
Marathon man like Cheptegei…
All gold like am [Cheptegei]…
On the yet to be released episode of the NuveyLive Podcast, Flex says that he wrote the song about three years ago when Cheptegei set a world record for the 15 km road race (2018). I was in studio with Mio Made and we worked on it. Hit up Fik Fameica.. He also says he hopes the song would be played for all Ugandan sports women and men during and after events.
On Flex’s verse he also alludes to Robert Katende to prove he is in tune with Ugandan sports and games: Robert Katendee with the moves – Flex raps. The hook also alludes to the fact that Joshua Cheptegei is an Olympic gold medal list.
Kampala Boy features American Rapper Swae Lee, Navio, Fik Fameica, Mozelo Kids, Shena Skies, Keko, Mido Made, Kemishan, A Pass, Lagum The Rapper and Wake.
