An event slated to happen at exactly 6pm took longer to get started due to poor time management by the fans on a greater extent and a few delays in the hands of the organisers of Not for Sale Listening Party. The party kicked off at about 7:30pm officially.
Flex D’Paper is among the few entrepreneurial minds in UG Hip Hop who managed to craft a business model around hip hop. Not for Sale Listening Party was a mixture of entrepreneurship, milestone accomplishment and experimental project that came to a success.
Cosign emceed the night keeping the audience entertained. To warm up the night; a freestyle from Lethal of Row records put the revellers in to motion.
The crowd was treated to strictly hip hop mixes of national and foreign music to make them comfortable. Other genres were played and performed after Flex D’Paper took revellers through his Not for Sale Mixtape.
In paraphrase; it is dedicated to those who are trapped overseas and are victims of human trafficking. You can’t sale a person. The recent and culminating land wrangles in the country inspired him.
It was a smooth ride as fans seemed to know half the tape due to an early leak. Physical copies are now available and it among the core values of why the event happened. A display table for the Rapaholix wear was available. All these were a celebration of Flex D’Paper’s journey; from afro beat fusion with hip hop Flex to a more diverse flex flexible.
Performances from Maro, NTM, Play01, and Delboy, KSL delighted the crowd after the official listen. Flex took the opportunity to unveil his supposed protégé Keinoh who performed his lead single focus off ETHVILLE.
Hip hop presence as regards artist support was remarkable if you looked left, right and centre you would notice rappers, producers and hip hop bloggers too. Simon Eli, Sylvester, Mickey SoLow, Sliq Teq, Habo, Pryce Teeba, Baru, The Sphynx, Delboy, Agee among others.
It was evident Yenze Aliko as single of the mixtape is Flex’s fans’ favourite. Upon performing it the energy was so great. Pryce Teeba’s Side Zeno, Musege and Nvuga Kampala Remix got many off their seats. Byg Ben exceptionally showcased his performance energy too
Shout outs Flex, letting budding talent to grace the stage with him. Haz a self-proclaimed freestyle artist had his round and others.
On low side however, the event was about to be gagged by the technical delays. The Almost famous DJ’s had the party rolling on a serious hip hop wave.
Given the event was at Goethe-Zentrum Kampala (German Institute in Kampala) rooftop, achieving a proper sound and ensuring acoustics were friendly was a real hustle. The team found a way to consolidate it to a bearable experience.
Flex has come from far and given this is his first solo driven event it was important to celebrate the little which he put together for it is huge for UG Hip hop.
If you remember Flex D’Paper’s More a track that escalated Baru’s career as a producer then you know Flex has worked so hard to get where he is. Physical copies of Not for Sale are now available and in the interest of those who didn’t make it, copies I am told are still available.
